Variety, the Spice of a Business Analyst’s Life

It is a broad career that many people need help understanding. The IIBA(r) and BABOK(r) guides define Business Analysis. However, an Analyst can do many different things with their career. Let’s look at some aspects that make our careers interesting and varied.

# All industries use BAs.

Any organization, large or small, can use Business Analysis. Business Analysis involves analyzing the business needs, regardless of industry or domain, and translating them into a business solution. As a BA, you choose where you want to work and can change industries as often as you like.

# Business analysis can be at the top of the corporate ladder.

Experienced BAs are more likely to perform enterprise analysis. This is why this goal is important. However, it is a challenging and interesting role in the corporate hierarchy. The study is a unique career that allows you to use the same skills in senior and junior positions. The only difference is that business problems at the top and bottom will be conceptualized more than physical ones.

# Analysis is both light-hearted and enjoyable.

Some BAs have the natural talent to communicate business needs in a way that business stakeholders can understand. These BAs can share with stakeholders to understand their business needs and what they want to achieve. The Business Analyst can translate these business benefits into business requirements that can be used to create a solution. Some Business Analysts enjoy the detail and details that go into business requirement definitions. These Business Analysts can be trusted to help their counterparts, Business Analysts who only talk the talk. You will find your place based on your strengths and choices. Keep in mind that both types of Business analysts play equally important roles.

# Are you more comfortable working loudly and explicitly, or are you more comfortable with it being implied and assumed?

You will notice a lot of emphasis on requirements gathering in certain projects, especially waterfall-based ones. This includes running workshops, preparing requirements, and running the documents through multiple cycles of approvals and reviews. When I said “loud, explicit” business analysis, I meant this. Other cases may see the requirements gathering part of the project still being very important but playing a more fluid role in the project’s daily life. This is often how conditions are managed in an Agile project environment. This allows business analysis to be applied in two ways without changing the essence of what is being done. Business analysis is, therefore, very flexible and adaptable as a skill.

# What part of the project’s life cycle do you prefer?

Software developers are mostly involved in the build phase of the software development process. Business analysis involves you at any or all stages of the software development cycle. This is true for both Agile and traditional approaches. You will still be doing some business analysis at all locations, although your involvement will vary depending upon which stage you are involved in. You can choose the type of business analysis you enjoy the most and get involved in the project parts you are interested in.

# Are you interested in being part of either a project or operations team?

As part of business operations, some Business Analysts may be employed. They are usually involved in business cases, feasibility studies, and other enterprise-level business analysis activities. This is great, as not all business analysts enjoy the project environment. Most Business Analysts work on projects and thrive within that environment of highs and lows. Depending on your preferences, you can choose the type of environment in which you prefer to work as a Business Analyst.
